With their strongest side for years in 1971, Weston, captained by Roger Webber, won the Somerset Senior K.O. Cup in the final at the County Ground in Taunton. This was the first time that Weston 1st XI had won a trophy in their history. They had beaten Druids, Congresbury, Burnham, Keynsham, Lansdown and Taunton in the final. Weston ran two 45-seater Baker’s coaches to Taunton that day, so they were well supported. A team photo is shown separately.

In 1971, Weston defeated the M.C.C. by 7 wickets. Tony Webb took 5 for 20 and Philip Slocombe with 64 runs and Brian Rose with 39 were the top scorers. Weston won the North Somerset Youth League and Cup in 1971 under
John Hook’s captaincy well supported by Philip Slocombe, Nick Evans Andy Wagner and David Tracey.
Also, in 1971, Weston-super-Mare CC failed to commit themselves to join the newly formed Western League, and it was 17 years before they were accepted.

Weston were marking time in 1972 still playing friendlies Brian Rose made his first century for Somerset against Kent and there was a first-class county debut in the same game for Bob Clapp. Chris Norton was Weston’s only centurion in
1972 in a September game at Claverham.

In 1973, Alan Porter became the first player in over 20 years to take 100 wickets for the club in a season. In a2 nd XI match at Long Ashton, John Brooke became the season’s only centurion.

Uphill Castle were in the Somerset League in 1974 and Belvedere CC were in the Bristol & District League, Question asked “why were Weston still playing friendlies on a Saturday apart from a few ‘trial’ Somerset League games?” Richard Turner took 9 for 7, including a hat-trick for the Falcons against Congresbury. David Tracey hit a century before lunch in an all-day 2nd XI game at Claverham.

In 1975, Weston’s 1st and 2nd XIs joined the Somerset League in their respective top divisions. Weston won their first league game by 7 runs against Bridgwater. Phil Slocombe became the first Somerset player to score 1000 runs in his debut season in 1975 scoring 2 centuries.

In 1976, George Ricketts took 10 for 38 in a Falcons’ victory against Frome ‘A’.
